About The Secret Garden

'Mary would always say that what happened at that moment was almost magic.”

Spoilt and abandoned, 10-year-old Mary Lennox is sent from India to Yorkshire, and put into the care of an Uncle she has never met.

At Misselthwaite Manor, a broken-hearted house full of secrets and strange noises, Mary discovers a garden as lost and neglected as she is. If she can learn to make friends with robins, grumpy gardeners, and a boy who speaks to animals, Mary might be able to bring more than just the garden back to life.

Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved and radical story about the magic of nature and the nature of magic is adapted in a new version by Holly Robinson (soft animals, Soho Theatre) and Anna Himali Howard (Graceland, Royal Court; Orpheus, Opera North).

Please Note: the auditorium and stage are completely uncovered and shows in the main theatre repertoire may be cancelled or abandoned because of the weather (this excludes films and one-off live music and comedy shows which are never cancelled because of the weather). Tickets are non-refundable in the event of cancellation because of the weather but may be exchanged. Otherwise, please be aware that all ticket purchases are nonexchangeable and non-refundable unless a show is cancelled for non-weather related reasons.

See it if The open air setting is perfect. The story is a brilliant classic illustrating English/Indian social history. The adaptation is clever.

Don’t see it if You are a purist - Colin does not bravely tackle his weakness & determinedly learn to walk motivated by Mary. PC-ness gone mad.

See it if You want good representation for disabled people. Open air theatre is also a beautiful experience for a show about things coming to life

Don’t see it if You expect it to be exactly like the movie. Naturally things have been altered for the stage show experience
